Aid for Maher, India

The Corona situation in India continues to worsen dramatically. In May the country registered a global peak in new infections of more than 400,000 cases per day was registered for the second consecutive time. The health system is completely overburdened. Hospitals lack intensive care beds and medical oxygen.
In addition, there is a shortage of nurses and vaccines. After reaching a rate of around four million vaccinations daily, this has now dropped to 2.5 million. Consequently, it will take more than a year until the entire population has been vaccinated twice.
Maher Ashram, which is supported by the Suppiah Charity Association, is also dearly affected by this situation. We spoke to the organisation's staff on the phone in Pune to get an impression of the current situation in India. They are in great despair.
The virus is spreading with such force that they hear of the death of a friend, family member or work colleague practically every day. In their words, "We are scared. Scared to look at our phones and find out who died today".

Die Corona-Lage in Indien spitzt sich weiter dramatisch zu. Zum zweiten Mal in Folge hat das Land Anfang Mai einen weltweiten Höchststand an Neuinfektionen von mehr als 400.000 Fällen pro Tag registriert. Das Gesundheitswesen ist komplett überlastet. In Krankenhäusern mangelt es an Intensivpflegebetten und medizinischem Sauerstoff.
Zudem fehlt es an Pflegekräften und der Impfstoff ist knapp. Nachdem in der Vergangenheit eine Rate von rund vier Millionen Impfungen an einem Tag erreicht worden ist, ist diese jetzt auf 2,5 Millionen gesunken. Es wird folglich über ein Jahr dauern, bis die komplette Bevölkerung zwei Mal geimpft worden ist.
Davon ist auch die von der Suppiah Charity unterstützte Organisation Maher Ashram betroffen. Wir haben mit Mitarbeitern der Organisation vor Ort in Pune telefoniert um uns ein Bild der Situation zu machen. Aktuell ist die Verzweiflung bei ihnen gross. Das Virus greift mit einer solchen Wucht um sich, dass sie praktisch jeden Tag vom Tod eines Freundes, Familienmitglieds oder Arbeitskollegen erfahren. Um es mit ihren Worten zu sagen «We are scared. Scared to look at our phones and find out, who died today”.
